Made in the Midlands member Strip Tinning Automotive, a leading Electronic Component Manufacturer based in Birmingham, has big plans to grow the business in the next few years specifically in the automotive EV Battery and Roof Glass markets.

Two years ago Strip Tinning Automotive decided to list on the AIM market, transforming into a PLC - a remarkable feat for a small-scale enterprise. This strategic move was primarily fuelled by their expansion into the EV battery market, specifically the supply of battery sensing components. They also recently raised £5m to support their EV division and specifically the development of its Cell Contacting System product for the EV battery market.

As a company who achieved an A-grade ESG performance rating in 2023, due to their commitment and dedication to sustainability, and as an established, longstanding supplier to Tier 1 Automotive giants supplying into OEMs such as BMW, Audi, Ford, and Mercedes Benz, Strip Tinning Automotive certainly has the right platform to achieve its growth targets.

Made in the Midlands representative Yasmin Banner sat down with Stephen O’Connor, Commercial Director at Strip Tinning Automotive, to find out why they decided to join the membership, their business aspirations and the challenges they need to overcome to get there.

Suppliers of specialist connectors, Strip Tinning Automotive have joined Made in the Midlands (MIM) to build a stronger network with the EV supply chain in the UK, to assist them design, manufacture and sell their battery sensing technologies for EV battery modules. Specifically they are looking to form relationships with innovators in this space to learn best practice and connect with like-minded businesses. With a network of more than 400 manufacturing companies, joining MIM will allow Strip Tinning to get support with other aspects such as gaining new suppliers, finding opportunities for funding, and recruitment.

Stephen O’Connor further explained that this is a change for Strip Tinning Automotive which has always thrived in a more global market, traditionally exporting >95% of their core automotive glazing connector revenue to clients outside the UK. But the EV battery market has significant established levels of innovation, design, engineering and manufacturing firmly situated in the UK. And so Strip Tinning’s networking needs have developed, and MIM seems a perfect fit.

The conversation with Yasmin Banner, representing Made in the Midlands, illuminates Strip Tinning’s recent aspirations within the manufacturing industry. Amidst discussions of potential collaborations and networking opportunities, Strip Tinning’s commitment to leveraging external support for growth becomes apparent. Their engagement with industry-specific recruitment agencies and platforms like LinkedIn underscores their proactive stance in addressing the perennial challenge of talent acquisition—a critical aspect in sustaining their growth trajectory.

Looking ahead, Strip Tinning’s vision is firmly anchored in ambitious growth targets, which hinges on two key pillars: advancements in high-tech connectors for roofing glass and the market for battery sensing products in EVs. As they navigate through the complexities of growth, and with a 56% growth in their order book already achieved this year, the challenge of talent acquisition looms large – but they are certainly ready!
